Oi! Spaceman: Adventures in Media Criticism
Stupid Sexy Warmongers (The Sea Devils)

In this episode of Oi! Spaceman, Daniel and Shana are joined by Lee Russell of Hougly Reviews and the They Must Be Destroyed on Sight! podcast (often co-hosted by Daniel, so go check it out). They discuss the Third Doctor romp "The Sea Devils," with mentions of some terrible creature effects, campy overacting from Roger Delgado, and what Mac Hulke's socialism meant for his work on Doctor Who.

Main Topic: The Sea Devils. Introducing Lee. Shana's initial thoughts on The Sea Devils: fashion victims. With a political subtext. "You don't have to pay attention to that shit!" The Sea Devils in context with the Pertwee Era. Pertwee driving around in boats and Jo Grant getting shit done. A very typical but atypical Pertwee. Can't compare Jo to Liz. Not quite a father/daughter relationship. Moving on to the Master. Eleven-dimensional chess. A useful idiot. The Three/Master dynamic. Turtle drag queens and wisdom. The Master watches the Clangers. Repeated plots in the Silurian stories. Dudes in rubber masks talking politics. "Reverse the polarity of the neutron flow." Parlaimentary Private Secretary Walker. Is Walker a stand-in for Barry Letts? Stupid Sexy Military. Sandwiches and swordfights. Dickish Jon Pertwee. Would Liz Shaw put up with it? Lee and Daniel talk about the beer can. Did Jo kill a guard? The death of Roger Delgado. Malcolm Clarke's score. The Sea-Doo chase. Screwdriver usage. Wrapping up. Next week: The Three Doctors.

Attack of the Demon Poo Baby (Terror of the Autons)

In this installment, Shana and Daniel confront Jo Grant in her first adventure, Terror of the Autons, which has some really horrendous CSO in service of a demonic doll. Also: Mike Yates makes eyes at Jo, The Doctor sort of gets along with the Brig and UNIT, and innovative uses for Bunsen burners are found. Not least, Daniel and Shana coin the term: "Daffodil Bukkake." Oh, and some loser with a funky beard makes his first appearance.

Main Topic: Terror of the Autons. Daffod-evils. Demon poo baby. More with working titles. A random Family Feud reference. "The Great Robert Holmes." Just someone to hand you your test tubes. Yates as a Ken doll. The introduction of the Classic Master. Bloodless efficiency. "Fifty Shades of Purple." Bowler-hat Time Lord. Shana's introduction to the Delgado Master. Deconstructing the Master's plan in Autons. Death By Daffodil Bukkake. Moffat's favorite thing. The role of plastic in society. Talking about Demon Poo Baby. The Master's obsession with the Doctor. Shana wants to cosplay Demon Poo Baby. The infamous cocoa scene. The Adventures of HAVOC. The Autons are only in two stories. Re-pilot. "The Master is Always Up to Something Stupid, The Doctor Gets to Be Badass, Unit Does its Action Thing, and Jo Grant Wears a Short Skirt." Petwee's Lisp. Character dynamics. Daniel says "y'know" a bunch. Jo's relationship to the Doctor. The uniqueness of the Pertwee Era. The Doctor/Brig relationship. Comparison to Series 8 and Danny Pink. The Doctor and War. Chaotic Good and Lawful Good. Bureaucracy. The Tissue Compression Eliminator. Adventures in Lab Safety. Lived-in-um-ness. "Doctor Rogers." Rocker Mullet Jo Grant. Airheady Jo Grant. Wrapping Up. Next week: The Sea Devils.

Some Men Just Want to Watch the World Burn (Inferno)

Finally Shana and Daniel get around to what is probably the single most-requested Classic Who episode they've gotten to-date: Season 7's Inferno. Drilling, parallel universes, and green zombie werewolves make for an entertaining episode, both for the series itself and the podcast.

Main Topic: Inferno. Not such a bad intro. Slightly more loopy. What if it was called "The Mo-hole Project?" The one with the big drill and the green zombie monster thingies. Drill technobabble. Parallel Universes. Shana's general thoughts on Inferno. What does Shana think fandom thinks of Inferno? Steven Shapansky. All Action by HAVOC. "If this is your jam, that's great." Inferno Trivia. Camfield heart attack. Alternate titles. Venusian aikido. Pertwee and driving. Pertwee isn't Shana's type. Free will not an illusion. "So he just kind of sings sometimes?" Alternate universe Liz. Shana ships Brig/Liz. This Brig versus the Brigade Leader. Honoring Nicholas Courtney's performance. Shana doesn't recognize Benton. Stahlman. Sir Keith. Petra Williams. Greg Sutton. Derek Ware and his history with Who. The injured stuntman. Plumbing the metaphor. Shana gets critical and mean. All wearing eyepatches. "Thank you Moffat for making your episode dumb." Charming in velvet. Rough-and-tumble Pertwee. Wrapping up. Next week: Terror of the Autons.

Troughton and Jamie and Vaughn and Packer and Zoe and Isobel (The Invasion)

This week, Shana and Daniel discuss one of Daniel's all-time favorite stories, one that prefigures the entire Pertwee era, The Invasion. Lots of couples in this one, including a Smithers-Burns relationship between Packer and Vaughn and some real girl power between Isobel and Zoe. Also: the Cybermen.

Main Topic: The Invasion. A discussion of "Sinister Allies." Adorable married couple bullshit. The great Kevin Stoney as Tobias Vaughn. Coffee and paczkis. Sassy "under-Brigs." What if this was a lost episode? Packer... Waylon Smithers and James Bond and Lex Luthor. Shana "icks" the Great Intelligence. Fascist but sympathetic Vaughn. Human monsters. Picking on the Weeping Angels. Packer... Shana doesn't want to talk about Jamie yet. "Land of the butt shot."  Isobel and creeping feminism. "Give her her thirty seconds, you fuckhole," says the Brig (effectively). What happens when you have two female characters in an episode. Representation of teenagers in media. Zoe's pretty clothes. Damseling Zoe and Isobel. Don Harper's music. Riffing on Groucho Marx for some bizarre reason. Electronic Morricone or "really good Scooby Doo." Interrupted by a small dog bark. Ripping off "The Invasion" in New Who. The Name of the Brig. A Robot Chicken Sketch. The birth of UNIT. Shana randomly starts singing an Ashley Simpson song. Troughton's Doctor plays the bumbling fool but is not actually a bumbling fool. Zoe gets cross with a supercomputer. Zoe destroys the cyber fleet. Zoe and Clara. Fraser being Fraser. Shana is annoyed at Daniel. Getting used to the pacing. Long-term companions. Projecting a relationship on Troughton/Jamie. A "Packer" supercut. Cyber-Packer. Wrapping up.
